In Judaism, doors are important. The ornately carved and decorated doors in this tryptich speak not just of decoration, although they are at least that.
In the photo on the left, notice the two menorahs in the upper panel. The menorah is one of Judaism’s oldest symbols, referring back to the oil lampstand that first stood in the moveable tabernacle-tent and later illuminated the inside of the Temple. But the doors themselves, swinging back and forth when we go out or come in, symbolize actions taken, good or bad. In Deuteronomy 28, God urged his people to take the high road and to obey him – blesssing and honor would follow, whether they were going out into the world of work and commerce, or coming home.
