This beautiful and striking arch can no longer be seen or photographed. Previously known as the Hurva Arch, it used to be located not far from the Zion Gate in the hub of the Jewish Quarter of Old Jerusalem. Built in 1977, this slender archway stood over the ruins of a 250 year-old synagogue that had been destroyed in the Arab-Israeli war of 1948. In 2006 the archway was taken down so that synagogue, rebuilt to the same specifications as the original, could be built. The story of the Hurva Arch parallels Isaiah’s promise in the scripture verse – that the Lord will restore Jerusalem so that it reflects his justice and glory.
