In the Middle East, hospitality is a high value. If you are a host, you want to treat your guests very well. It would be the height of impropriety not to answer your door when you were expecting a guest. In Revelation 3:20, Jesus reverses the expected roles. Instead of playing host, he assumes the actions of a guest. He knocks on our door, beckoning us to open up to him and have fellowship with him. We can show him and, as he so eloquently put it in Matthew 25, those who are “the least of these” in and treat them as honored guests. Or we can ignore the door and go about our business, spurning the fellowship. What will it be?
