Art Print Description:
I will stroll among the palms, who clap their hands to God, and let their shade and dates comfort me
In the first century before Christ, a date palm culture flourished along the Jordan Great Rift Valley, from Aqaba in the South to the Sea of Galilee in the North. The most famous centers of date palm production were En-Gedi and Jericho. This date palm culture was utterly destroyed in the 10th century, not to be revived again until 1924. At that time Iraqi, Egyptian, and North African varieties of date palms (from California!) were introduced. Today in Israel, over 90% of date palms are cultivated on plantations managed by cooperatives and kibbutzes. In Psalm 92, a righteous man is likened to a healthy date palm like those shown.
